Join us Sat., Aug. 21, 1-2:30 pm, for WHS alum and nationally recognized educator Kristen Amundson. She will sign her new book, 81 Questions for Parents: Helping Your Kids Succeed in School.
“As a former teacher, school-board chair, and state legislator, Kristen J. Amundson has spent decades answering parents’ questions about school. This book covers 81” questions—the answers to which reveal “school secrets parents need to know—the often unwritten rules that can make a child’s K-12 experience the best it can be. Should you ‘redshirt’ your kindergartener (and hold them out for a year)? How much parent help on homework is too much?…81 Questions for Parents combines common sense, research, and a little humor to help parents support their child to get the best possible education,” describes publisher Rowman & Littlefield.
Amundson, a 1967 WHS graduate, has more than three decades of leadership in K-12 education at the local, state, and national levels. The former teacher spent nearly a decade on the Fairfax County, Va., school board, including two years as its chairwoman, and sat as a senior vice president at an independent education think tank. She also served as president and CEO in a national education association. Amundson’s political service includes terms from 1999 to 2009 as a Virginia General Assemblywoman, with several years as political director/vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
The educator co-founded the non-profit organizations a la BECA Women’s Scholarship Foundation and EduTutorVA. She has written extensively about parenting, and her book 81 Questions for Parents: Helping Your Kids Succeed in School was published in 2021. She is also a frequent contributor on education to the opinion pages of The Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Washington Post, among other publications. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Citizen Award from Macalester College, her alma mater.
