Our sixth visiting author of the summer is Watertown native Stephen Heidenreich, who used harrowing challenges in his life to learn how not just to meet his own goals, but to help others find their own success. In Running to Win: Strategies to Triumph in Record Time, readers learn how to excel in athletics, academics, or both. This inspirational book teaches step-by-step strategies, tools, and habits for long-term optimal performance in business or in life.
Heidenreich gained local fame as Watertown’s greatest miler in its track-and-field history, breaking the four-minute mark eight times following his tenure at WHS (1967-1971). In 1976, while training for the Olympic Team, he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Heidenreich was left with the mental faculty of a two-year-old child, and doctors gave him a five-percent chance to live, predicting he would never attend college or run competitively again.
Heidenreich applied effective strategies, successful training techniques, and leadership skills to the physical and mental tests of the accident’s damage. Stephen said to his mom, “Do they know who they are talking to? I’m Stephen Heidenreich. Don’t tell me what I can’t do–I will complete college and compete again.”
Heidenreich was not only able to regain his life but went on to complete his undergraduate degree, an MBA, and train for the 1980 Olympic team; he also later coached several successful high-school cross-country and track athletes around the USA. Currently, he travels the country sharing his inspirational story and presenting Yoga for Runners workshops for traumatic-brain-injury and post-traumatic-stress survivors.
